today uncle gary asked, out of curiousity about my extravagant spending habits on instruments and equipment, "what is music to you?" and i replied, though i wasn't really sure, "emotion".
have you felt a jumbled puzzle miraculously clicking into place when you struck the right chord? have you heard a song, a melody, that made you feel inexplicably happy, no matter what the lyrics were? have you sat down at the piano, when even you didn't know what you were feeling, and played the song that came automatically to your fingers? have you felt the awe sitting before a professional sound system, and felt the notes wash around you, every one so crisp, you could almost pick it out of the air? have you heard a song that matched your exact emotion, and stopped everything you were doing to listen and contemplate in silence? have you listened so hard to a performance, that at the end of it, you realised your mouth was hanging open? have you tweaked with a sound system, and realised how much difference a little knob could make? most of all, have you felt that surge of unexplainables, when a piece of music hits the climax?
i have. so, i think, for me, music is emotion.
